We are supply a “wheel stud” to our automotive customer. This is a special part with threaded body and a cylindrical head with internal thread. They require mechanical plating, which is very thick and clogs the blind hole in the head. We then switch to the thinner GEOMET 321, but this only improves things marginally.

Is there any good alternative plating/coating? or can this clogging actually be avoided somehow?

We have similar problem and report this to Geomet Taiwan. They say about min. 10% will have clogging issues and there is nothing they can do. They then refuse to accept repeat order. Plating in blind hole is always very difficult, especially when it is deep and has internal thread. We can not think of a solution either!!

And if you try to make the coating thinner then you face another problem: insufficient coating thickness inside the blind hole.

Maybe you can try GEOMET® 720?
